Welcome to the world of cli-fi. Yes, climate fiction has its own term now. Yay!

Whether you have a winter break, or if you’re just looking for a good read that challenges your perspectives, we’ve put together a list of books to make the choice easy for you. Or, to be more precise, we’ve listed three authors and their work, all of them with unique and innovative ways of covering and writing about climate change. Some are fictional, some actually aren’t, but they all have something in common: they challenge your perception of climate change and humans in an emotional way.

Maja Lunde

She’s a Norwegian author and screenwriter, aiming to write a Climate Quartet: four novels with climate as the overall topic. The History of Bees was her first novel for adults published in 2015, a bestseller in several countries. And you guessed it right, pollination is the main topic. Her second novel was Blue, released in 2017 and already sold to more than 20 territories, covering the issue of water access. Maja has a unique storytelling skill, with compelling and emotional characters. We’ve for sure started the countdown for the last half of her quartet.

Yuval Noah Harari

If you haven’t heard of Yuval Noah Harari, you’ve for sure heard of his books Homo Sapiens and the follow-up Homo Deus. Harari is an Israeli historian, philosopher, and author with a pretty rare mindset. His thinking has reached Barack Obama and thousands of others, with his books being bestsellers in many markets. 21 lessons in the 21st century were published recently, and in general, the author covers topics such as climate change and the past and future of human mankind. Even algorithms become a surprisingly fun topic when Harari is the one writing about it. Ps: These are not fictional.

Margaret Atwood

Lastly, are you a fan of The Handmaid's Tale? Join the club. The famous series is actually based on Margaret Atwood's novel, written in the 80s. Apart from being a famous Canadian writer winning numerous awards, she is also an environmental activist. While The Handmaids Tale touches the topic of climate change briefly, Atwood dives even further into this in the Maddaddam Trilogy. These books are definitely on our must-read list.
