To celebrate World Food Day, the Singapore’s leading food delivery company, partners with CHOOOSE to provide ‘climate positive’ option.

In January 2018, foodpanda, Singapore’s leading food delivery company, pioneered the sustainability movement in the local food delivery industry with the introduction of the opt-in plastic cutlery option and banning of shark fin. This October, in line with World Food Day (Oct 16), foodpanda will be launching an industry-first sustainability initiative: Happy Hour with an Impact.

Starting 16 Oct, and subsequently every first Friday of the month, between 2 and 3pm, foodpanda Singapore will make every order placed climate positive by offsetting 100 kg of CO2 per meal or approximately SGD 0.49 per order. The donation will go to a United Nations-verified, climate positive landfill gas-to-electricity project in Thailand. For perspective on carbon emission rates:

  • A roundtrip between Singapore and Kuala Lumpur emits 83 kg of CO2
  • Annually, on average, a Singaporean leaves a CO2 footprint of 10.3 tonnes (28.2 kg/day)
  • 100 kg CO2 of also equates to an average of 45 Taxi rides in Singapore / 49 10-minute showers / 52 days of watching TV / 142 laundry washes

Going One Step Further and Going ‘Climate Positive’

A 2018 World Bank report found that within the region, Singapore has one of the highest CO2 emission rates per capita, compared to larger countries like Malaysia, Hong Kong and Japan. Understanding the severity of the carbon emissions, foodpanda has committed to making real change with Happy Hour with an Impact making all orders placed in this hour climate positive. For concrete environmental benefits, the monthly initiative will go beyond achieving net zero carbon emissions to reduce additional carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

CHOOOSE supports individuals and organizations in over 60 countries, and foodpanda Singapore becomes CHOOOSE’s first partner in Asia. This partnership will be in support of the Bangkok Kamphaeng Saen project in Nakhon Pathom, Thailand, whose efforts are verified by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Gold Standard for the Global Goals.

The Bangkok Kamphaeng Saen project foodpanda is donating to, captures methane gas from one of Asia’s largest landfills - preventing methane from escaping into the atmosphere and converting the gas into clean electricity for the local electric grid. In addition, the project also helps improve the air quality for local communities. This landmark project has been issuing carbon offset credits since 2013 and is expected to for at least another decade - indicating the stability of the project. It is also well-regarded internationally, with a range of global corporations supporting the initiative, including Microsoft.
