Japan’s flag carrier and largest airline, Japan Airlines (JAL) have partnered with climate-tech company CHOOOSE to launch a voluntary carbon compensation program for all domestic and international travellers.

JAL Group operations include passenger and cargo services to 349 destinations in 54 countries worldwide. As part of its comprehensive sustainability strategy, which includes achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, the Japanese carrier has launched the first step of its new, voluntary carbon compensation program in partnership with CHOOOSE.

“We’re proud to partner with Japan Airlines who are taking climate leadership by making climate action available for all its passengers. Research shows that most travelers would now pay a premium to offset their carbon footprint when flying – creating a more responsible future of travel. Together, we are building travel back better”, says CEO and CHOOOSE founder Andreas Slettvoll.

The first step of Japan Airlines’ carbon program enables customers to calculate and compensate for any type of flight, regardless of airline or destination, through a bespoke climate app on Japan Airlines’ booking site. The carrier is also planning to introduce a dedicated carbon program for its corporate customers later this year.

Through its carbon compensation programs, Japan Airlines’ customers will support a nature-based portfolio of climate solutions. The portfolio consists of sustainable forest management and land-use projects that protect natural ecosystems and wildlife, provide solutions for sustainable livelihoods, and empower communities. In addition, the climate portfolio supports multiple UN Sustainable Development Goals, improving ecological values and social benefits for those hardest affected by climate change.

“We are proud to launch step one of our climate offerings in partnership with CHOOOSE and are looking forward to introducing our customers with more sustainable travel options in the near future”, says Akira Mitsumasu, VP Global Marketing at Japan Airlines.
